MeltsWell went from DR 0.4 to 18 in five weeks. One directory did it.
We launched a marketplace for home bakers with zero backlinks. One directory did most of the work, thirty spam sites did nothing. The numbers, with names, updated as they move.
MeltsWell is a leaderboard and marketplace for people who bake at home. We launched it in early August 2026 on a domain nobody had ever linked to. Ahrefs put it at DR 0.4.
Five weeks later it's DR 18. I didn't run a link campaign. I submitted the site to some launch directories and went back to building. So I pulled the backlink report to see what moved the number.
The short version
One site did most of it. A few others helped. Most of what Ahrefs counts as "referring domains" is junk that passes nothing.
The numbers
| Sep 11 | Sep 14 | |
|---|---|---|
| Domain Rating | 7 | 18 |
| Backlinks | 701 | 774 |
| Referring domains | 377 | 414 |
| Dofollow domains | about 45 (12%) | about 50 (12%) |
400 domains sounds like a lot for a site that's a month old. Most of them are spam, covered below.
Update, September 14: 7 to 18 with no new links
Three days after I wrote this, DR went from 7 to 18. I assumed something big had linked to us. I pulled the report again. The only new dofollow links were three pages on our own studio site (DR 0) and two more spam pages.
So nothing new moved it. Ahrefs recalculates DR on its own schedule, and the links that landed in late August and early September only got fully counted now. The uneed links below are from September 1. The DR jump is them being weighed, not new links arriving.
Lesson: DR lags the links by one to three weeks. Don't read a jump as "something just happened." Look at first-seen dates in the backlink report instead.
The links that counted
DR is roughly: how strong are the sites linking to you, and how many other sites do they also link to. A DR 75 site that links to 20 domains gives you a lot. A DR 50 site that links to 3,000 domains gives you almost nothing.
Sorted by what they passed:
uneed.best (DR 75). Two dofollow pages: the tool listing and a "best food menu products" list that picked us up a few weeks later. Each page links out to 13 to 23 sites. This one did most of the work. Free to submit.
askmatchbox.com (DR 51). Dofollow, small page, three outbound links. I didn't submit here. They scraped the launch and listed it.
newname.ai (DR 29). Directory. Dofollow. Four outbound links.
launches.uicomet.com (DR 15). Product launch listing. Dofollow with a ?ref= parameter.
thejoai.com (DR 11), startup-list.org, finderlaunch.com, marketgenius.ai. All dofollow, all low DR, all fine. Each one is a small brick.
nodeandscale.com (DR 0). Our own studio site. Five dofollow links now, including this post. Counts for nothing yet. Will count for more as this site grows.
The links that did nothing
Around 30 of those 45 dofollow domains are one spam network. Same page template on every domain, URLs like /all/1888/20.html, page title "Boost your Google rankings with Premium PBN & Link Building". Anchor text on every link to us: "High Quality Dofollow Backlinks DA 50 PA 40 Premium PBN Network Service meltswell.com Rank First Page Google Fast SEO Link Building Buy Backlinks Online Cheap."
Nobody bought these. They scrape new domains and link to thousands of them to make their own pages look like link hubs. Some show DR 40 or 50 in Ahrefs. Each one links out to over 3,000 domains, so the equity per link is a rounding error.
Google ignores this kind of thing. I'm leaving it alone for now. If the anchor text spam keeps growing I'll put the pattern in a disavow file, mostly for peace of mind.
What I'd do again
- Submit to uneed.best first. It's the only free directory in this list with real authority and a dofollow link.
- Submit to the small ones too. Individually they're nothing. Ten of them is a floor.
- Don't count referring domains. Count dofollow domains that link to fewer than 100 other sites. That number was about 9 for us, and that's the real story.
- Pull the report once a month. Takes ten minutes and you learn what works instead of guessing.
What's next
DR 18 doesn't rank anything on its own. The next lift comes from pages on MeltsWell that bakers and buyers search for, and from more lists like the uneed one including us because the product earned it. Slower than submitting to directories, and it compounds.
If you're building something and want the same data for your own domain, the free Ahrefs backlink checker shows the top 100. Sort by dofollow, ignore anything that links to more than a few hundred domains, and you'll see your real number.
